Australia Announces Squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024

On May 01, 2024, Cricket Australia announces squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024 which misses out some big names. Aussie all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been named as captain of Australia. Mitchell Marsh will captain Australia for the first time in T20 World Cup.

Experience Aussie batter Steve Smith and young destructive top order batter Jake Fraser-McGurk along with Jason Behrendorff are among the big names who miss out on Australia’s 15-member squad for the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Whereas, Ashton Agar – a left-arm spinner, who last played a T20 international back in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, has been added to Australia’s squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

George Bailey – the chairman selector of Cricket Australia, believes that Cricket Australia has chosen a well-balanced squad for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup and he is confident of their squad for a good showing in the tournament. George Baily further said, “This squad is well experienced having wide experience of World Cup which offers a variety of options and covers the different scenarios which the selection panel of Cricket Australia believes will influence in West Indies with the different nature of their venues and our opposite teams.”

Talking about Ashton Agar’s selection and omission of Steve Smith and others from the squad, Baily said, “It is good for us to have left-arm spinner Ashton Agar back into Australia’s squad following a wave of untimely and unfortunate injuries. We believe he can play a very important role in the upcoming T20 World Cup along with Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Cameron Green, and Mitchell Marsh himself in accompanying our option of the front-line bowling attack.”

“Steve Smith, Jason Behrendorff, Spencer Johnson, Matt Short, Xavier Bartlett, and Aaron Hardie were all part of our long discussions including young Jake Fraser-McGurk, who is developing quickly and continues to impress with his performance, is yet to play T20 cricket at international level.”

Australia’s captain Mitchell Marsh said, “It has been an enormous pleasure for me to play for my country and now it is even a greater privilege for me to lead the team at a stage like World Cup. We have had some good victories in the recent past and I am very hopeful that we will continue to do this in the World Cup.”
