On May 01, 2024, Oman announces squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with the name of a new captain. Omani board announced that Aqib Ilyas, batting all-rounder will lead the team in T20 World Cup 2024. Aqib Ilyas will be captain of Oman for the first time in T20 World Cup.
The decision about Aqib Ilyas was revealed at the time of the squad announcement. The support from the former captain Zeeshan Maqsood will provide confidence to the new captain. Sultan Ahmed, former captain of Oman, was led from the 2016 edition to the 2021 edition.
Aqib Ilyas said, “It is an honor for me to be trusted for the captaincy of Oman and a huge responsibility as well. My only aim is too many victories in my leadership and we are working hard for the T20 World Cup. It is also acknowledged that the recent Asian Cricket Council Premier Cup provided the chance for better preparation.”
The 7 players are from the final of the recent ACC Premier Cup and the remaining players were also the part of T20 WC 2021. Bilal Khan, left-arm Yorker specialist, will take responsibility for the fast bowling lineup along with Kaleemullah & Fayyaz Butt. The spin bowling department will be controlled by the left-arm orthodox newcomer, Shakeel Ahmed, along with the captain Aqib & Zeeshan.
The opening responsibility will be given to Kashyap Prajapati & Naseem Khushi and the middle-order responsibility will be on Aqib Ilyas & Zeeshan. Pratik Athavale, the wicket-keeper batter will take control of the lower middle order along with Ayaan Khan.
