Papua New Guinea announces Squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024
On May 08, 2024, Papua New Guinea announces squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024 co-hosted by the West Indies and USA. PNG board announced that Assad Vala, batting all-rounder will lead the team in T20 World Cup 2024. Assad Vala will be captain of PNG for the second time in the T20 World Cup. CJ Amini, leg-spinner all-rounder will be vice-captain of this team.
Ready for their second appearance at the ICC T20 World Cup, PNG has named their 15-member squad. PNG qualified for the 2024 T20 World Cup after winning the East Asia Pacific Regional final in July 2023.
PNG selects the 10 players from the 2021 World Cup and one reserve member (Jack Gardner) of that competition has also been selected for this 9th edition of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Assad Vala, the skipper, admits that the side for this event is more prepared than the 2021 T20 WC. In the T20 World Cup 2021, PNG faced many complications but in 2024, there is high hope in the Caribbean for his team.
Assad Vala also highlights that, “The team has a high energy level this time, and some players from the previous edition are working hard in the training. They have faced many difficulties in the 2021 edition due to COVID-19 and preparation was not up to the mark. Now, all focus on this event and I believe that we are going to do well in this upcoming event.”
14 members are selected in the PNG squad of the qualifying group, with T20 WC 2021 player Chad Soper back in the PNG squad after impressing in recent matches, particularly on tours to Oman and Malaysia. Young John Kariko – a left-arm orthodox spinner, is the youngest player in the PNG squad, and he has experience in Caribbean conditions through Papua New Guinea’s appearance at the 2022 U-19 World Cup where he took a 5-wicket haul against Uganda U19.
